Guide to theatres in Glasgow

Theatre goers are also spoilt for choice with so many great theatres within the city centre. There's the Kings, the Arches, the Pavilion, the Tron, the Ramsorn and the Citizens to name some of the main ones. Tickets for plays and events can be purchased through the Box Office at Candleriggs.

The highlights:

Arches Theatre Glasgow

The Arches is both an arts receiving and arts production house in the heart of Glasgow . As such, its foremost aim is to provide a programme of arts events which reflects the cultural aspirations and interests of the local Glasgow community. This is an acknowledgement by the Arches of the need to be vital and relevant to the city that it serves. At the same time, Glasgow is a European city with strong international ties and interests. The Arches aims to mirror the city's cosmopolitan aspirations as well as forging new international links and developing new types of cultural activity.

The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

Situated in the heart of the city The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is Scotland 's premier music venue offering a wide variety of performances and events. The Hall plays host to the very best in classical, world music and popular entertainment.

Kings Theatre Glasgow

The King's, Glasgow is one of Scotland 's most historic and significant theatres. It opened in 1904 as one of the most brilliant designs of the prolific theatre architect Frank Matcham and has played host to top stars and shows ever since. It is home to possibly the very best Christmas pantomime to be seen in the United Kingdom which over the years has featured the Scottish greats including Stanley Baxter, Jimmy Logan, Rikki Fulton, Jack Milroy, Elaine C Smith and Gerard Kelly.

Pavilion Theatre Glasgow

Little altered and virtually unspoilt since its inception, the seating capacity of 1449 is made up of 677 stalls, 341 circle, 413 balcony and 18 box seats. While the stiff shirts in chauffeur-driven cabs have given way to coach parties from the rural areas of Strathclyde and beyond, a policy of providing the best in live entertainment has been pursued consistently. The portents look good for the vibrant Pavilion Theatre of Varieties.

Theatre Royal Glasgow

The Theatre Royal has continued to go from strength to strength presenting not only its home company, Scottish Opera, but also Scottish Ballet and other world class arts companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. Successive front of house and backstage developments have ensured the Theatre Royal keeps pace with standards of customer care and technical facilities. A further phase of refurbishment involving redecorating the public areas, replacing seating and carpeting, and, most significantly, a much-needed extension to the orchestra pit, was completed in the summer of 1997. The Theatre Royal had continued to assure its place as one of Scotland 's principal performing venues.

Tron Theatre Glasgow

Situated in Glasgow city centre the Tron presents a programme of home produced shows, visiting work from Scotland , the UK and abroad, as well as music, comedy and shows and workshops for children and young people.

Citizens Theatre Glasgow

With a policy of low pricing and accessibility for all, the Citizens Theatre has always been Glasgow 's true community venue. It actively encourages and educates people to come back to the theatre, offering a wide-ranging programme of classics (from Goethe to Oscar Wilde) and new plays, although they generally take the summer off.

The main theatre is a beautiful Victorian auditorium, built in 1878 and seating approximately 600. Two smaller studio theatres were created in 1992. The resident theatre company, The Citizens' Company, was formed in 1943 and has since gained a reputation for taking a challenging approach in an individual style. You are always welcome and dress code is not an issue. Keep your eyes peeled for ghostly apparitions as the theatre is said to be haunted by a green lady - a manager who leapt to her death from the upper circle.
